The wild

Ten days between volcanoes, hot springs and the Pacific Ocean: the route is designed so that a single trip shows you every contrast Kamchatka has to offer.
We stay in countryside spa hotels, in the tents of the expedition camp at Tolbachik and at a glamping site on the ocean shore. Comfort alternates with a real expedition to places with almost no infrastructure.
Ten days, and you will see Kamchatka as very few people ever do.
From boiling hot springs to the icy Pacific: these contrasts give the journey its character.

4x4s, volcanoes and taiga

We arrange the 4x4s, the transfers and the whole route around the region: all you have to do is hold on and enjoy the views.
After a whole day in the saddle of a 4x4 comes a sauna and a table under the open sky: the Update Camp team makes sure that even a tough expedition stays comfortable.
Each group travels in four 4x4s with three people in each, and a comfortable Mercedes-Benz meets you at the airport for the drive to the hotel.

Every day is a new chapter: the Mutnovsky volcanoes give way to Opasny Canyon, and the hot springs to the lava fields of Tolbachik.

A sauna in the middle of the taiga

After a full day in the 4x4s or out on the lava fields, the Update Camp team sets up a sauna right in the expedition camp: simple and basic, yet it could not feel more right out here.
And at the end of the journey, a sauna complex with a steam master on the shore of the Pacific.
Comfort and a deep reset after a day in Kamchatka's harsh conditions.

Day by day

Laguna spa hotel in Paratunka
Day 1
Arrival and thermal pools
Yelizovo – Laguna spa hotel
You are met at Yelizovo airport near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and driven to the Laguna spa hotel in Paratunka, set among birch woods and thermal lakes. After the long flight, you can head straight to the aqua centre and its thermal pools. In the evening there is a welcome dinner, a chance to meet the group and a short talk on how the expedition works.
A crater lake on the volcano
Day 2
Gorely volcano
The first ascent
The trip's first ascent takes you up the active Gorely volcano to craters filled with turquoise lakes. This day shows both you and the team how you feel in the mountains before the main climb of the week. If the weather will not let you up, Opasny Canyon and the Dachnye hot springs take the volcano's place.
A convoy of 4x4s on Kamchatka's off-road tracks
Day 3
The road north
By 4x4 through the taiga to Tolbachik
A long day on the road: a convoy of 4x4s heads to the north of the peninsula on gravel tracks and through the taiga. On the way there is a stop for Kamchatka's legendary pies and lunch at a canteen deep in the taiga. By evening you reach Tolbachik Camp, the expedition base at the foot of the volcano: here you sleep in large tents, and this is where the wild part of the route begins.
The Dead Forest seen from a tent
Day 4
Tolbachinsky Dol
Lava fields and hardened flows
A day among the lava fields of the 2012 eruption: hardened lava flows, warm ground underfoot and a landscape often compared to the Moon. It is an active but easy-going day before the main climb. In the evening, a chef cooks dinner right at camp.
A volcano above the autumn taiga
Day 5
Climbing Tolbachik
The main summit or an alternative route
The group splits up: those who are ready head up Tolbachik, while the others go to the eruption vents, the Dead Forest and the cinder cones. Both routes start from the same base, so in the evening everyone is back together at camp. Of the whole trip, this is the day people go on talking about for longest.
A room at the Sputnik hotel
Day 6
Back to comfort
Tolbachik – Sputnik hotel
The expedition part is over: the 4x4s take the group back south to the Sputnik hotel in Paratunka. In the evening: a comfortable room, a hot shower, thermal pools and a relaxed dinner. After several days in camp, it feels like a reward in its own right.
A bear on a Kamchatka river
Day 7
Floating down the Bystraya River
Fishing and fish soup over the fire
A calm day on the water: a float down the Bystraya River with stops to fish and lunch on the bank. Ukha, a traditional fish soup, is cooked over the fire from whatever has been caught. No one can promise a catch, or a bear sighting, but the chances are real. In the evening you return to the hotel.
Opasny Canyon near the Mutnovsky volcanoes
Day 8
Free day
An experience of your choice
This day is deliberately left free, to suit the weather and whatever the group feels like doing. You can rest at the hotel or choose an extra experience at additional cost: a helicopter flight to the Valley of Geysers (weather permitting), a trip to the Mutnovsky volcanoes, quad biking or other activities. And if a day has had to be moved, this spare day keeps the main programme intact.
Steller sea lions on the rocks during the boat trip
Day 9
The Pacific Ocean
A boat trip and Khalaktyrsky Beach
In the morning, a boat takes you out into the ocean: the Three Brothers rocks, seabird colonies and, with luck, whales and orcas. Then on to the black volcanic sand of Khalaktyrsky Beach, where the group spends the night at Shiksha glamping, right by the water. The final evening brings a traditional Russian sauna with a steam master to the sound of the surf, followed by a farewell dinner.
Shiksha glamping on Khalaktyrsky Beach
Day 10
Heading home
Khalaktyrsky Beach – airport
A last morning by the Pacific. If your flight is later in the day, you can take a surfing lesson, as long as the waves allow. Then it is time for the airport transfer, and on the way anyone who wishes can stop at the fish market for some red caviar.
