Why go to Socotra?

A place that looks like another planet.
Turquoise sea, white-sand beaches, canyons and desert landscapes where the famous dragon trees grow.
Socotra is one of the most isolated islands on the planet, a place that has kept nature you will hardly find anywhere else.

Life under canvas

For Socotra we bring our own camping tents. Inside are soft sleeping bags, which we spread out like blankets to make it warmer and cosier.
We were among the first to bring our own gear to the island, and now we bring everything: from tents and bedding to food, organisers, power banks and even peanut butter for breakfast.

Socotra is not for everyone

It is part of Yemen, yet it looks like a planet of its own. But Socotra is not really about the exotic.
It is about coming back to yourself.

White beach, dunes and ocean

Instead of the internet, conversations by the fire and a sky full of stars.
You eat fish that was caught moments ago. You laugh and play games with the locals on the beach.
It is about new experiences, new impressions and people you can simply be yourself with.

Day by day

Crossing the island by 4x4
Day 1
Landing on another planet
Jeddah – Socotra – camp at Arher
In the morning, a charter flight from Jeddah brings the group to an island without a single chain-store sign. An hour and a half by 4x4 across the island, and you are at the white dunes of Arher, which run right down to the ocean. The camp is already set up: all that is left is to make up your bed, have dinner and watch the first sunset.
Evening by the campfire
Day 2
A wild beach
The eastern tip of the island
A day without packing up camp. In the morning the group heads to an empty beach at the eastern tip of the island, waits out the midday heat back at camp and gathers round the fire in the evening. With no phone signal and no feed to scroll, the day feels almost twice as long.
Jumping into the fresh water of Kalisan Canyon
Day 3
Kalisan Canyon
Sunrise on the dunes – the canyon – Dihamri
At sunrise, the white dunes of Arher; by midday, a canyon of fresh water the colour of bottle glass. You jump from the rock ledges and swim, and the way back up is a sun-baked trail, the toughest climb of the trip. A hot lunch is waiting by the cars, and in the evening there is a new camp by the water at Dihamri.
Dragon trees seen from a tent
Day 4
The dragon tree forest
Dihamri – Diksam Plateau
In the morning, snorkelling right by the camp, then the road into the mountains. On the Diksam Plateau, camp is pitched among dragon trees, which grow nowhere but Socotra. Nights here are cool and sometimes misty: the kind of night when you want to burrow deep into your sleeping bag.
Evening on the beach by the lagoon
Day 5
On to Qalansiyah
Diksam – Qalansiyah, Detwah Lagoon
A drive right across the island to the west, to the village of Qalansiyah and Detwah Lagoon. The camp stays here for three nights, and life settles into an unhurried rhythm. In the evening, sunset on the lagoon's sandbar.
Dolphins next to swimmers
Day 6
By boat to Shuab Beach
Qalansiyah – Shuab – Qalansiyah
In the morning, wooden boats take you along the cliffs to Shuab Beach, which no road reaches. Dolphins almost always join along the way, swimming just a few metres from the boat. In the afternoon, the beach, a swim and some rest at camp.
A local fisherman with an octopus
Day 7
A day at your own pace
Detwah Lagoon and free time
A free day: Detwah Lagoon, the beach, a book and good conversation. If you like, you can wade out across the shallows with a local fisherman, who catches and cooks his haul right on the shore. In the evening, a farewell seafood dinner.
White dunes by the ocean
Day 8
The way home
Qalansiyah – airport – Jeddah
Your last morning on the island: breakfast, breaking camp and the drive to the airport. In the afternoon, the charter flight takes the group back to Jeddah, to hot showers and phone signal. For the first few days at home, you catch yourself checking your phone out of habit, only to find there is nothing in it worth looking at.
