Your morning begins in the savannah among the wildlife, the day carries on along the ocean coast, and in the evening there are vineyards, mountains and dinner overlooking the Atlantic.
Cape Town brings together ocean, mountains, architecture and restaurants, and close by are beaches with penguins, wine estates and one of the most scenic roads in the world.

Wildlife you can't see on a screen

The magic of a safari lies in its unpredictability.
You never know what you will find round the next bend: a herd of zebra, a lioness with her cubs, a mighty rhino or an elephant stepping right out onto the road.
We spend two nights at a safari lodge near Kruger National Park. Every morning and evening we head out on game drives with experienced rangers.
This is where you begin to feel the real Africa: not the one from photographs, but alive, vast and utterly unpredictable.
Seeing Africa's Big Five in their natural habitat is the kind of experience that stays with you for a long time.

Cape Town: a city at the edge of the continent

Cape Town is a city where nature and urban life sit quite literally side by side.
Mountains, ocean, architecture, design-led restaurants and neighbourhoods full of character: in a single day the scenery here changes several times over.
We explore the city from top to bottom: we wander its good-looking streets, see neighbourhoods that remind you now of New York, now of a European village, now of Miami, and of course watch the sunset at Camps Bay.
This is where you really feel the scale of South Africa: mountains behind you, the wild Atlantic Ocean ahead.

Freedom on four wheels

We spend one of our days in Cape Town behind the wheel of legendary Cobra Shelby convertibles.
The route runs along the ocean, over winding mountain roads and seafronts with views of Table Mountain.
At sunset we stop at a viewpoint to watch the sun go down into the Atlantic.

Wind in your hair, music, the ocean and the road: the moment when the journey itself becomes the highlight.

Penguins, the ocean and the Cape of Good Hope

South Africa can surprise you even where you least expect it.
At Boulders Beach we walk along the wooden boardwalks above the sand and watch a colony of African penguins strolling about, bathing and diving into the clear water.
Then we head to the Cape of Good Hope, a symbol of the Age of Discovery and one of the most south-westerly points of Africa.

Rocks, blue-green water and a strong ocean wind give this place an atmosphere all of its own.

South Africa's wine country

After the ocean and the wildlife, the route changes once again: we head to the Franschhoek valley.
Its name means “French corner”, and the valley really does feel like a small European province set among South African mountains.
Wine estates, tastings, local food and mountain scenery are waiting for us.

Day by day

The group's welcome dinner
Day 1
Arrival in Johannesburg
O. R. Tambo Airport – hotel – welcome dinner
After a long flight, you are met at arrivals and driven to a hotel in a quiet, secure neighbourhood. There is time to catch up on sleep or sit by the pool, and the dry, warm Highveld air tells you straight away that you are in Africa. In the evening the group gathers around one table for the first time, in a garden that smells of jasmine.
The road to the savannah
Day 2
Road trip to the savannah
Blyde River Canyon – Hoedspruit – first game drive
The road runs east across the country: the golden fields of the Highveld, the Panorama Route and the rim of the Blyde River Canyon, one of the greenest canyons in the world. By evening you are in the reserve, and your first game drive in an open 4x4 sets off almost as soon as you check in. The air grows thick and smells of dust and grass, and the horizon turns red just above the acacias.
Elephants on a morning game drive
Day 3
The Big Five
Sunrise game drive – a pool above the savannah – sunset in the bush
A full day in the reserve with two drives alongside a ranger, at sunrise and at sunset, and the pool and the shade in between. Lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo: the Big Five that people travel to Africa for. The vehicle stops, the ranger raises a hand, and you can hear an elephant breathing twenty metres away.
The Cape Town coastline from a helicopter
Day 4
Flight to Cape Town
Hoedspruit – Cape Town – steakhouse
A change of climate in a single flight: from the hot savannah to the ocean. The plane comes in to land past Table Mountain, and a cool Atlantic wind greets you outside the airport. In the evening, a steakhouse: the meat here is among the best in the world, and the wine comes from the valley next door.
Cape Town streets
Day 5
The feel of Cape Town
Historic centre – V&A Waterfront – Bo-Kaap
A day in the city: the historic centre, the harbour full of yachts and the brightly painted houses of the Bo-Kaap quarter. Then free time: shopping, coffee on the waterfront or a trip up Table Mountain, where the city lies below you like a scale model. In the evening the sun sets into the ocean to the sound of the surf.
A Cobra convertible on the coastal road
Day 6
Convertibles and penguins
Chapman's Peak Drive – Cape of Good Hope – Boulders Beach – sunset at Camps Bay
The signature day of the route: a convoy of Cobra convertibles follows a road cut into the cliffs above the ocean, all the way to the southern tip of the peninsula. Then the penguins at Boulders Beach, the Cape of Good Hope and sunset on the sand at Camps Bay. You feel the engine with your whole body, the wind tries to snatch your hat, and the Atlantic wakes you up from the very first minute.
A tasting in the winelands
Day 7
The winelands
Franschhoek and Stellenbosch – tastings – farewell dinner
About an hour and a half from the city, you are in the Franschhoek valley, where the vineyards climb right up to the mountain slopes. Over the day the group visits three or four wine estates, always including Delaire Graff, each with its own tasting: from chilled Sauvignon Blanc to full-bodied Pinotage. In the evening, back to Cape Town for a farewell dinner nobody wants to leave.
Sunset on the last day in Africa
Day 8
Flying home
Cape Town – airport
Breakfast with a view, suitcases and the drive to the airport along Table Mountain. Eight days and two completely different Africas: the savannah and the ocean. On the plane you scroll through your photos and realise the sunrise game drive was only a few days ago, yet it feels like a month.
